Workplace Discipleship 101: A Primer is a twelve-part introduction to the basics of following Jesus Christ (“discipleship”) in our workplace, wherever and whatever that may be – paid or volunteer, novice or veteran, blue collar, management, art, technology, child care . . . it all counts. It is available in print, e-book, and audiobook formats.
And now it is accompanied by a free twelve-part video series and a downloadable study guide. Access the whole series for personal or group study – think about forming a study group over the coming weeks or month!
Here’s an overview of the first three video episodes, as a sample:
Episode 1: Commit
In Episode One, we define “work” and “discipleship” and make the case that Jesus and scripture have important things to say about our discipleship in our work lives. Jesus wants to be Lord and leader of that half of our waking hours we spend working – not just our church and personal lives. This adventure promises blessing to us workers as well as “salt” and “light” for our co-workers, customers, managers, society, and the planet itself. It can bring glory to God. But we can’t make any real progress unless we commit ourselves to the adventure. A casual, occasional, haphazard approach won’t work. This is a call to commitment!
Episode 2: Pray
In Episode Two, we remind viewers that it is impossible to “follow” (“be a disciple”) a living personal Lord if we don’t talk to him! Prayer is talking to God. Jesus set the example with his great life of prayer to his Father. The whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation is full of prayers – and reminders to pray. This topic must not be left out of our “faith at work” curriculum and life plan. In this episode we think about the how and the when of workplace prayer – before, during, and after work. We urge a continuation of “help me Lord” emergency and crisis prayers but point out that any relationship (with God or other people) is impoverished if the only time we talk is to ask for urgent help! Better – essential even – is to make a daily practice of proactive, holistic prayer, giving thanks and apology looking back and asking for guidance, strength, and help going forward. The Lord’s Prayer is the primary model, among some other examples discussed.
Episode 3: Listen
In Episode Two, we reminded viewers that it is impossible to “follow” (“be a disciple”) a living personal Lord if we don’t talk to him in prayer. Now in Episode Three, we get the other side: listen to God. God can speak through nature, dreams, people, conscience . . . any channel he wishes. But the primary channel is the Word of God written (the Bible) centered on the Word of God living and incarnate (Jesus Christ). David Gill gives solid, practical suggestions on how to regularly, successfully hear God’s guidance and encouragement in scripture – not just the passages using workplace vocabulary but the whole counsel of God.
