Richard Lui, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, with an MBA from the University of Michigan, is an author and journalist with MSNBC/NBC News. Enough About Me opens with a self-disclosing story about an episode in his interesting international career journey, flying from Singapore to interview for an anchor job at CNN International in Atlanta. Lui later became a broadcast journalist at MSNBC working in Manhattan. The story switches to his personal crisis when his father is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. His supervisor was supportive, and Lui was able to adjust his work obligation.
Enough About Me covers a lot of academic studies on selflessness and how it can improve health, prolong life and makes us happier. Jesus and scripture, we need to remember, teach and demonstrate selflessness in amazing ways. Enough About Me is not just a broad, comprehensive research study but includes career and personal anecdotes along with practical exercises to develop selflessness.
I was personally looking for insights on caregiving, since joining the board of the Family Caregiver Alliance – a nonprofit serving the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Lui demonstrated exemplary selflessness in managing (with extended family and friends) the caregiving for his father, regularly flying cross-country to visit his dad in a memory care facility. Lui reveals his faith and the fact that his father was a pastor whose own sacrificial work for others during Lui’s childhood provided the pattern and inspiration for developing selflessness.
Enough About Me deftly weaves together the story of a high-powered career, personal growth, faith-based culture, Asian filial piety and family-focused care management. All workplace disciples will be inspired by this story. We must not allow our careers to rule out, in any way, our selfless care for family and others by following in the footsteps of our Lord.
